PIM project

Vlaanderen in Beeld (VLIB) is the successor of the BOM Vlaanderen project in which the problems of storage and disclosure of multimedia content were studied. VLIB has the ambition to collect the audiovisual material that is created in Flanders and to make it easily and rapidly accessible to the general public. This brings an added value to the Flemish cultural and social heritage. Schools can use the audiovisual material for educational purposes. In addition professionals would also benefit an easy and quick access to this material.

The project brings new challenges for companies that develop archiving software. To allow access to audiovisual material, uniformity is required and therefore old methods often fail. The demand for new technologies is increasing. Software companies are facing the difficult challenge of finding a common standard. Collecting, unifying and providing access to audiovisual material has a significant impact on the existing processes. Consequently, new business models and processes should be studied and tested.

VRT-medialab has the specific task to define the requirements for a network between broadcasters, media companies en (end)users, which will make efficient exchange of high quality content possible. Further on VRT-medialab will do more fundamental research concerning long term storage of digital items.
