PIM project

Over the last few years, the media landscape has changed radically and traditional broadcasters and publishers are now forced to compete with alternative business models. At the same time, media consumption is undergoing drastic changes as well due to the arrival of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Therefore the future role of traditional media companies and publishers as well as the evolution of their business has to be determined.
SMIF is a cooperation project for the collection, production, processing and distribution of non-competitive content. The project aims to respond to the above trends by offering to all Flemish media players (broadcasters and publishers) a direct or indirect joint platform for the implementation of new business models. This platform offers an efficient cost control, new opportunities for internal and external cooperation and a flexible adjustment to the swift changing media landscape.
The SMIF project is a partnership of VRT-medialab, technological (a.o. IBM) and university partners, industrial associations, media groups and representatives of the main Flemish publishing industry.
VRT-medialab contributes to the creation of an open IP-content distribution platform for a general as well as a specialized (e.g. medical) public. In this regard, research is done into the user experience of new devices such as smart phones and tablets.
Finally, the opportunities of new business models will be assessed by means of interactive advertising of digital and mobile devices.
