ITEA2 project

Lately 3D cinema is rocketing as witness the huge success of 3Dmovies as Avatar, Up! and Alice in Wonderland (the latter being converted from 2D to 3D). The reason for this success is the digitization of the production and distribution process. Furthermore, TV manufacturers launch more and more 3DTV models on the market.

The JEDI project (Just Exploring Dimensions) is a European ITEA2 project involving partners from the whole glass-to-glass chain. JEDI involves research on post-recording, graphics and subtitling as well as set-top boxes and displays.

In an initial phase some specific use cases for 3DTV were defined in collaboration with Videohouse. The goal is to develop, also in cooperation with Videohouse, two specific use cases: a live shoot and a produced shoot. The basic principle of the live shooting is a 3D scenario and an in-depth script. A VRT director will attentively focus on the new image language required for 3D (e.g. in-depth scripts, stereoscopic window violations, image transitions,…).

Experiments with post production adjustments will reveal the feasibility of assessment and/or correction. Furthermore, experiments will be set up in order to check the quality of encoded 3D for distribution.
.
VRT-medialab, in cooperation with Telenet, will start up a user-lab and participate in a field project in order to assess the end-users’ experience. This way the user-test will be extended to a wider public.

Finally JEDI will examine the consumers’ experience with the conversion of 3D-movies created for cinema to a 3D TV-screen.
