VRT-medialab as well as its spinoffs CandIT Media and Limecraft will have an info stand at the info fair, which can be visited from 9:30 am. During the afternoon sessions we’ll be playing a major role. Our researchers will not only focus on the main projects that are currently running: CHAMP and MediaLoep (session 1 at 13:30) and VillaSquare/VillaCRM (session 2 at 15:30). We’ll be also looking back to the past 5 years, probably not without any feeling of melancholy.
13u30-15u Session 1
Introduction: Maggy Beyers, director MediaNet Vlaanderen and Christel De Maeyer, Howest & chairwoman VRT-medialab steering committee
Innovation in file-based production - Peter Defreyne
In the last few years the broadcast industry has made the transition to file-based workflows using IT-technology. This presentation looks at the achievements and future challenges. As a response to today’s shortcomings, the CHAMP platform is presented as a flexible production platform which enables programme makers to produce a multi-platform story in an easy and efficient way.
Taming your media chaos - Karel Braeckman
This presentation explores the difficulties in managing and searching large media collections. VRT-medialab was involved in many projects (PISA, MediaMap, MediaLoep, ...) that investigated this theme and explored very diverse solutions. We will demonstrate that manual annotations are not the only weapons against media chaos in broadcast facilities. We will also show how new tooling, crowd sourced metadata, feature analysis and the Semantic Web can render your media collection more transparent.
15u30-17u Session 2
Beyond the red button: making second screen TV apps - Hendrik Dacquin with Bert Wijnants, Kasper Jordaens and Ilja Strobbe
VillaSquare, one of the latest exploits of the VRT-medialab MediaCRM and MediaSquare teams, is a purpose-built platform for the popular live één-television programme “Villa Vanthilt”. This platform is in many ways a pioneering second screen project and has received numerous positive feedback. We will present the stepping stones towards the Villa Square use cases and discuss the underlying technologies we have put to work. Come and see the mayhem HTML5 caused in the broadcast world.
VillaCRM: a direct relationship between the broadcaster and its customers - Mike Matton
In this presentation, we will discuss the MediaCRM project. Recent technological advancements have made it easier to build and maintain CRM systems for the media sector. These systems provide a method to build a direct relationship between the media (broadcast) company, and its customers: the viewers. We will focus on the results obtained from VillaSquare, the recent test case around the Villa Vanthilt show, as well as give a general overview of the MediaCRM architecture. Finally we will discuss some benefits and pitfalls of establishing a CRM relationship.
MediaSquare and the curious case of Villa Vanthilt - Ike Picone, senior researcher SMIT
In this presentation we offer the first insights drawn from a survey amongst the users of VillaSquare. We look at how the users experienced this second screen application as a tool for interactive television and as a community-building tool. The results suggest that differentiation towards specific target groups will be needed when further developing such services.

VRT-medialab invites you to visit its booth at the 2011 IBC New Technology Campus from 9 to 13 September 2011 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. During the exhibition VRT-medialab organizes three demonstrations: VillaSquare/VillaCRM, CHAMP and MediaLoep.
VillaSquare/VillaCRM is the supporting social media platform of the live VRT programme “Villa Vanthilt”. The second screen application offered by this platform enables viewers to communicate with the showmaster of the programme by means of social media. A selection of the viewers’ comments is being discussed during the programme. Moreover, experiments with CRM-techniques are being carried out in which certain target groups can be reached in real-time.
CHAMP is a flexible production platform which enables programme makers to realize their multi-platform story in an easy and efficient way. Innovative and fit-for-purpose web applications allow them to collaborate over networks, irrespective of the location, by means of consumer devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. During the demo, the applications built for and used during the production of the TV show “Tournée Générale” will be shown.
MediaLoep illustrates how to improve the search and retrieval of audio-visual material by, on the one hand, (re)using the metadata created during the production process (e.g., subtitles) and by, on the other hand, automatically enriching this data through the Semantic Web and Linked Open Data (e.g., Wikipedia). The intuitive search interface allows programme researchers to retrieve the desired media material in a quick, clear, and simple way.
VRT-medialab is situated in Hall 8 - Booth 8.G39.
Free registration tickets can be obtained here by mentioning our ticket code 14893.

Yesterday evening VillaSquare was launched, an innovative platform that allows viewers of the popular TV programme Villa Vanthilt to interact with the content of the programme. Villa Vanthilt is a Flemish TV programme that is broadcast live on één, the generalist channel of the Flemish public broadcaster VRT. Yesterday evening Villa Vanthilt was watched by 900.000 viewers, which means a market share of more than 45%.
VillaSquare is an innovative web app developed in HTML5 in which content is automatically updated in real-time. The web app is hosted on Amazon and renders very well on tablets too. The app enables viewers of Villa Vanthilt to enter into dialogue with each other as well as with the programme maker. Hence VillaSquare stimulates enhanced experience through content shared on the platform but also through reactions posted on social network channels such as Facebook and Twitter.
